You could ignore the subtle clues Google is suggesting, but if you do, you will simply lose out to those that have a well organized site. You know heading tags work, you know sitemaps are important, meta tags have been doing it forever, but microforats or rich snippets as Google calls them, will soon be playing a larger roll.
